Day 1 – Christchurch to Lake Tekapo
Make your way across the tranquil Canterbury plains with the glorious Southern Alps in sight. It won’t be long before you emerge over the mountain pass to the beautiful southern lakes of Mackenzie Country, famous for its Merino sheep. Check out the tasty local provisions of country villages before arriving at beautiful Lake Tekapo with its iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, open-air hot pools and observatories for star-gazing. Day 2 – Lake Tekapo to Queenstown
Leaving one turquoise lake for another, start your journey south passing stunning Lake Pukaki, a great point to stop and view Aoraki Mount Cook the ‘Cloud Piercer’. Why not take a detour along- side the lake into Mount Cook National Park itself to explore the village and surrounding walkways? Pretty orchards, sprawling vineyards, rushing rivers, and beautiful alpine vistas set the scene for your fabulous drive to Queenstown, adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere! Day 3 – Explore Queenstown (2 nights )
There’s so much to see and do today, and with a two night stop-over the choice is yours. Get the adrenalin pumping with bungy jumping, jet-boating, white-water rafting or sky-diving. Check out the wineries or take a leisurely steam-boat cruise on Queenstown’s iconic ‘Earnslaw’ across the lake to a remote sheep-farm. Take the ‘gondola’ cable car up to the top of the hill and try out the luge or Bungy at the top! Explore the surrounding historic gold-rush villages, or even take a trip to Fiordland National Park and the spectacular Milford Sound. Overnight Queenstown
Day 4 – Queenstown to Franz Josef
Make your way over NZ’s highest sealed road this morning, then between the lakes to Mount Aspiring National Park via legendary Haast Pass. Lake vistas give way to lush rainforest, rushing rivers and the rugged Tasman Sea. Look up to discover huge waterfalls and the famous Glaciers that melt their way to the sea. Day 5 – Franz Josef to Christchurch
Explore the township of Franz Josef before driving along the ‘wild’ west coast road through the rainforest, around the bluffs, and along the coast. Check out the local arts and crafts along the way, or why not take a Tree Top walk for fabulous views. Isolated and beautiful, this is the real untouched New Zealand with its huge ferns and unique Nikau palm trees. Day 6 – Punakaiki to Hanmer Springs
Heading back inland today you will follow the mighty Buller River that twists and bends through narrow gorges and valleys. Pass through a sleepy historic mining town before joining the incredible Lewis Pass which runs from East to West cutting through the magical Southern Alps. Day 7 – Hanmer Springs to Christchurch
Relax and explore Hanmer Springs village this morning, maybe for some last-minute souvenir hunting, or there’s still time for bungy jumping or jet-boating, or even quad biking! Set off for your final adventure and emerge from the Alps and wind your way back down to earth, finally emerging into rolling hill farmlands filled with sheep, cattle and deer before the final drive towards Christchurch Garden City.
